I recently had the opportunity to try the Kristi Yamaguchi Workout DVD from Acacia Lifestyle. In case you don’t know, Kristi is an Olympic gold medalist and Dancing with the Stars champion. I admit, it does feel pretty cool to do a workout with a gold medalist! Haha! Kristi does the workout with Erin O’Brien who is a celebrity trainer. So, you can get the same results celebs pay for at the gym in your own home.
The 53 minutes of work is split into several different chapters, which I like. The warm-up is a great way to get your heart pumping. It’s also pretty fun. Then, you have the three 10 minute circuits. Each circuit starts with some cardio and ends with some weight lifting (I actually finally broke down and bought some for this workout). You will need a good amount of floor space to do the cardio sections.
Circuit 1 starts with the grapevine for cardio. It’s actually pretty fun. However, it can take a lot of room with the moving side to side. Then, you work with biceps! Circuit 2′s cardio involves skipping. I didn’t actually like it as the skipping causes things in my house to rattle or fall! Haha! So, I wouldn’t recommend this circuit in a small house or in a dorm. However, I did enjoy the tricep workout in this circuit. I know most of us have some jiggle on the backs of the arm at some point in time. So, this is a good way to tone that area up! The third circuit has some good old fashioned jogging and lunging for cardio. I kind of enjoyed this one. It definitely got my heart going and I was sweating! The weight work targets the deltoids or shoulders in this circuit. So, that was pretty neat.
Then, the dvd has a few other sections. It has a 4 minute from the top portion. This is actually a combination of all 3 of the cardio sections repeated. It’s a nice cardio workout. Then, there is a 9 minute pecs & core chapter. I don’t really feel the need to work my pecs, so I didn’t really appreciate this section. It is on the floor, which is different from the majority of the workout which is standing. Lastly, the cool down is a nice series of stretches. I enjoyed the stretches in this. However, I noticed that the quads stretch isn’t done on both sides of the body, only the one. So, I have to remember to stretch my other side on my own at the end.
Overall, it’s fun to think about working out with these two and the music is pretty cool. I did enjoy portions of each circuit. I just wish I could split them to pick which ones I wanted to do. Also, Erin suggests using 3, 5, or 8 pound weights. Since I’m a weakling, I used 2 and could still feel it. I might eventually work up to 3 though. Additionally, Erin does try to present low impact options as well as tougher ones. So, I feel like between the weights and the options, you can progress through different levels of fitness.
