Life Not Typical Book Giveaway

Since I’m a special education major and student teacher (as well as hopefully teacher), I attempt to look at everything special needs that comes in my inbox. So, when an email about the book Life Not Typical, by Jennifer Shaw appeared, I knew I had to read it. Jennifer is known for her contemporary worship songs these days. However, life has not always been easy nor has she always done this type of music. The book chronicles her journey to where she is now, as well as her son who has been diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder.
Touted as the first book of any genre to detail Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) from the parent’s perspective, Life Not Typical describes Shaw’s journey with her son Toby who suffered from SPD at an early age. Shaw describes moments of frightening behavior from her son.
The realities of Sensory Processing Disorder are harsh. One study estimated that 1 in 20 children in the U.S. are affected by the disorder. SPD is closely aligned with autism in that every autistic child has some form of SPD. To date, the medical community is unclear of the exact connection. SPD is also often misdiagnosed as ADD or ADHD. Shaw includes five informative appendices in her book, including an in-depth Signs and Symptoms section on SPD as well as original interviews that Shaw conducted with a Certified Early Childhood Intervention Specialist, a Speech and Language Pathologist and an Occupational Therapist who were all instrumental in helping her own son.
I actually have an interest in Autism. So, I was extremely interested in reading this book. Jennifer splits the chapters up between discussing her life (her transition to the type of music she sings now as well as her faith) and her son, Toby’s. I was particularly interested in the chapters on Toby as Jennifer described these behaviors that were definitely worrisome for any parent (Toby couldn’t handle going to the beach or being handled by anyone other than Jennifer and her husband) as well as the treatments implemented for him. I thought this was an eye-opening look into several things and I could hardly put it down. I think people with an interest in the disorder, Autism, special needs, or children would find it interesting as well.

I love reading, and this looks like a very interesting book. I have never heard of Sensory Processing Disorder and wouldn’t ever have guessed that it could occur in 1 in 20 children. Those are definitely suprising odds. I would like the opportunity to read this book and to become more educated on this subject matter.

I commented on this post about To Kill a Mockingbird: http://laughinglindsay.com/2012/01/scout-defends-atticus-clip-from-to-kill-a-mockingbird/
As a father of an autisic son and a man like you training to be a special education teacher. I love to read this types of books to encourge me and to share with the people around me to hopefully help me to understand my child better as well as help others understand them as well.
I would love to hear other Moms perspective about special needs kids. I took care of my son for 17 years (after a near drowning at 13 months while he was visiting his grandparents) with severe cerebral palsy. I am always interested in these type of stories.
