The Sitter Movie Review

The Sitter DVD

I know I posted The Sitter DVD Giveaway ages ago. However, I honestly just had the time to sit down and watch the DVD of it. Since it’s been a while since I last posted about it, I’ll give you a reminder of what it’s about.

Jonah Hill plays the main character. He has dropped out of college and doesn’t have a job. However, he cares about his mom and he wants her to be happy. So, he agrees to watch some people’s kids so that they can go out with his mom for the night. After meeting the kids, he soon realizes this job isn’t going to be as easy as he thought it was going to be. The girl acts significantly older than she really is. She uses bad language and she dresses inappropriately. One of the boys is very put together and conservative. The other boy is constantly breaking things and making messes that he refuses to clean up. So, as you can see, this is going to be a very difficult job. Then, to add some craziness, his “girlfriend” asks him to buy her some illegal substances to bring to her at a party. Of course, he agrees to this non-sense and embarks on a wild journey to bring it to her.

I watched this movie by myself the other day. I’m glad I didn’t attempt to watch it with family as the opening scene was of Jonah engaging in adult behavior that would have been awkward to see with someone else. Granted, it did a good job of showing the relationship between him and his “girlfriend” – she receives and he gives. I agree with its “R” rating with all of the issues and problems in this movie. I think I would watch this with either just a really close friend or my boyfriend because of it.

I will say that I liked the underlying messages in this movie. The conservative boy is struggling with being gay and the boy breaking things is apparently a foster child and he is afraid of getting close to people since so many families have sent him packing in the past. The little girl is dealing with knowing that her father is cheating on her mother with his secretary while her mom knows this but refuses to do anything about it. Wow! Talk about family issues. Jonah’s character ends up helping the kids deal with these issues while finding himself a real girlfriend. So, I liked the ending since I was able to see the characters happy.

Overall, this is an ok movie. I don’t know that I will watch it again or not. However, it does have some good moments where the kids are trying to deal with life. So, have you seen it? What did you think of it?

Disclosure: I received a free copy of The Sitter on DVD. No compensation was received. The opinions expressed are my own.

  1. I recently watched this myself. It was better than I thought it would be. I too liked the underlying messages and the fact that he was able to help the kids with their issues.
