Titanic at 100: Mystery Solved DVD Giveaway

Anyone who has been a reader of mine for any length of time already knows all about my fascination with the Titanic. I have done several Titanic related giveaways and reviews. I figured with it being summer and all, it was a great time to feature a great new DVD from the History Channel on the ship. I know that many children are bored during the summer and need some entertainment. I also know (as a hopeful future educator) that many students need to do more educational things during the summer months. So, I know that a good History Channel DVD can help many parents (or interested adults) out.
Having an interest in the ship, I wasn’t sure that I would actually learn anything new from this documentary. However, I was pleased to see some really cool things on it. Here is a synopsis to show what I’m talking about.
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic in April 2012, HISTORY partnered with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and RMS Titanic, Inc. for the most extensive exploration and imaging ever undertaken of the wreck site in TITANIC AT 100: MYSTERY SOLVED. For the first time, the entire ship and debris field is made visible in stunning HD and 3D-HD. CGI illustrates what happened structurally to the ship –minute by minute– after the collision. Never-before-seen views dramatically underscore this tragic history.
As the 100th anniversary of Titanic’s sinking approached, a team of scientists, engineers and imaging experts joined forces to answer one of the most haunting questions surrounding the legendary disaster: Just how did the “unsinkable” ship break apart and plunge into the icy waters of the North Atlantic on April 15, 1912? Two years ago, HISTORY took part alongside the world’s top underwater experts in the most thorough and exhaustive study of the wreck ever made. The undertaking yielded unprecedented new discoveries and the first comprehensive map of Titanic’s watery grave, helping specialists solve the century-old puzzle of what went wrong — and determine who or what was responsible.
TITANIC AT 100: MYSTERY SOLVED documents this mission, captures the high-tech mapmaking process, unveils astonishing pieces of never-before-seen wreckage and presents the expedition’s unexpected findings. Unprecedented new technology and expertise was used to create a precisely detailed portrait of the entire fifteen-square-mile patch of ocean floor where Titanic came to rest.
In the twenty-five years since the wreck was located, no one had ever explored and mapped the entire site — nearly half the area remained unseen and unknown, and significant portions of the ship, which could reveal how it broke, were missing. Now, after 100 years, every inch of the entire site is finally known, and every piece of the ship documented exactly where it landed on the ocean floor a century ago. See newly discovered pieces of the ship for the first time, follow the expedition’s new finds, and come to learn the definitive story of how the ship broke apart. TITANIC AT 100: MYSTERY SOLVED will answer the biggest questions about Titanic: did she have a fatal flaw, and if so, who or what was responsible?
I was impressed with the use of technology for sure in this special. I loved being able to see all of the gadgets do some great things. I really enjoyed when they displayed a large size hologram of the Titanic to attempt to figure out where pieces of the ship lay and where they went. It was really neat to see. I also enjoyed seeing all of the artifacts mapped out. It was equally interesting (to me) to hear about the various theories about how the ship sank and then to see them de-bunked because of (new found) evidence. For a person with an interest in the subject, I was pleased to be presented with new information and images. I’m sure that someone who doesn’t know about the ship would enjoy it as well.
This special from the History Channel is jam-packed with information on the Titanic and its sinking. This is a great DVD for any history/Titanic buff, bored young adults and adults. In fact, I’m pretty sure 3 lucky readers will have a more knowledgeable summer because they will win a copy of this on DVD!
