Last summer, I took a course at college on ethics since it is a requirement to graduate. I ended up taking Technology and Society where we discussed, read, and wrote about many different topics. Our final grade was a research paper with a presentation on a topic of our choosing. I picked artificial food coloring for my project. I picked it because I had heard some rumblings about it being bad for children (especially those with ADHD and Autism). Since I have an endorsement in Special Education and an interest in Autism, I thought it might be interesting to learn more about this. I was surprised to learn how many things have artificial color and other additives in them. Things such as an orange receives a coating of color to make it more appealing to consumers. Then, I learned how many of these things are bad for us. It can increase hyperactivity and cause cancer (depending on which one). I was a little upset to read all of this but I had no idea how to avoid them.
Recently, I learned about a fabulous brand that I am rejoicing over. It’s called UNREAL and they make candy. However, they don’t make your usual candy. They make candy without corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, GMO’s, artificial flavors, or synthetic colors! Wow! Isn’t that awesome? I’m so glad to see someone stepping up to make a difference about the foods we eat. It actually took chef Adam Melonas (UNREAL’s Chief Innovation Officer) and Nicky Bronner two years and thousands of recipes to come with the company’s first five candies. However, they got them right. I have tried a few of them and have been very impressed.
My favorite one is UNREAL 54 which is candy coated chocolates with peanuts. They are delicious with the chocolate and peanuts. I also really like UNREAL 77, peanut butter cups. Without the artificial stuff, I am able to really experience the flavors of the ingredients now. They are so fresh and yummy. However, you don’t have to take my word for it. Look at these other people who are fans of the candy…
So, have you tried UNREAL yet? What did you think of it?
Disclosure: I received a free coupon for UNREAL candy. No compensation was received. The opinions expressed are my own.
