Oh My Gosh I Never Learned To Cook Book Review

OMG Cover 266x300 Oh My Gosh I Never Learned To Cook Book Review

So, I still can’t believe it, but I’m supposed to graduate in May! That is something that is very exciting, yet horrifying at the same time. I mean once college is over, I have to really grow up. I have to get a real big girl job and actually… cook for myself. icon wink Oh My Gosh I Never Learned To Cook Book Review Haha! Yes, that’s kinda scary. I mean I’ve learned all sorts of things at college, but cooking hasn’t been one of them (sadly). So, when I was pitched to review Oh my gosh! I’m in college and I never learned to cook! book by Hollis Ledbetter, I knew I had to say yes.

This handy book is obviously targeted at people such as myself. However, with all of the helpful lists and tips, anyone could probably pick up and learn something. One of the things I love about the book is that it really explains what a basic kitchen and cook needs to know/have. It has a list of basic cooking supplies as well as a list of basic cooking terms and their definitions. It also lists abbreviations and equivalents, because who can remember those things???

The book also helps you make smart purchases. It tells what to look for when buying certain food items (such as fish) as well as things to avoid. So, it’s really much more than just a cookbook. Granted, it does have some fantastic recipes. But, this book goes above and beyond that. It also gives you suggestions for things to add to the dish to make it even tastier, healthier, or just plain classier. icon smile Oh My Gosh I Never Learned To Cook Book Review

Also, I really like the way the book is set-up. The chapter titles are very fitting for a college student (BA: Breakfast Attitudes instead of a Bachelor’s of Art). Plus, it does have a whole chapter on eating healthy to avoid the freshman 15. Additionally, it features some awesome drawings throughout to help the reader really make a connection to the tips/recipe (which can help you remember it more easily or feel more at home like it’s a conversation). It has a convenient index to help you find a certain recipe easier and quicker.

This is definitely a one of a kind cook book and I’m glad I have a copy of it. I would highly recommend it to any college students or recent college/high school graduates especially. However, I think it has at least a few recipes that experienced cooks may want to try.

Americas Most Wanted Recipes Without the Guilt Book Review

America Most Wanted Recipes Without the Guilt 196x300 Americas Most Wanted Recipes Without the Guilt Book Review

So, two years ago, I did the America’s Most Wanted Recipes Taste Test. Then, last year I did a More of America’s Most Wanted Recipes Book Review. This year, I’ve been trying to get healthy. Naturally, I was really excited to learn that the same author of the two above books was at it again with America’s Most Wanted Recipes Without the Guilt.

This new book from Ron Douglas came out on September 6th and costs only $16 at Simon and Schuster. It has 150 copycat recipes with less fat, salt, etc. than their counterparts. For instance, take the

Applebee’s Tijuana “Philly” Steak Sandwich, which is normally a whopping 790 calories. By using half the butter, lean tenderloin beef, low-fat cheeses, corn tortillas instead of flour, turkey bacon, and no sour cream, you can save 345 calories! Each recipe includes nutritional details, the number of calories you will save, and easy tips on how to prepare your favorite restaurant food without feeling the guilt.

The book really just implements common sense healthy changes to restaurant’s recipes. However, it is nice to actually get these popular dishes recipes for future use. It also nice to know how many calories you will be eating. The book is great for those of us who love the foods we find at restaurants, but not their nutritional facts. I think it will be a handy book to have around the house. If nothing else, it will keep me from ordering or eating some entire dishes. Haha!

Good Reads for College Students

College Safety 101 223x300 Good Reads for College Students

I posted a F in Exams: The Very Best Totally Wrong Test Answers book review several months back. So, here I am with a couple more fun (and slightly more informative) books for college students, just in time for going back to college.

One of the most helpful books I’ve come across for a college student is the book College Safety 101. It is written by and for a girl. However, the safety tips provided could be used by males too. It includes tips about keeping your room and stuff safe (you know, lock the door and things like that). It also urges you to trust in your gut instincts. However, it’s more than that with safety tips about traveling and your online profile! It’s definitely a worth-while read for any future or present college student or someone starting out on their own.

One of my newly favorite cookbooks is the The First Real Kitchen Cookbook. It is actually meant for the recent graduate who just got their first apartment with a real kitchen. However, a college student could totally use it. The book has tips and lists for what a basic kitchen needs (super handy). It also helps people learn how to be creative with their cooking while providing hints for foods to select to try. It’s really a nice book that I can’t wait to use next year when I hopefully move out of my parents house. icon wink Good Reads for College Students

Another fun yet less serious book is America’s Douchiest Colleges Book. It suggests that all colleges and college guys are d-bgs. However, you become a different type of one depending on which college you go to. This book lists several colleges with some facts and has a rating system in place. This is a different perspective for looking at/for colleges. It’s obviously written for guys. I don’t even use the d-word in my vocabulary and hesitated to use it in a post. However, it is the name of the book. I’m not offended by it by any means, I just don’t use it myself. I think many guys would find this book interesting.

Do you have any suggestions for books for college students?

Chicken Soup for the Soul Just for Teenagers #Giveaway

Chicken Soup for the Soul Teens 194x300 Chicken Soup for the Soul Just for Teenagers #Giveaway

It’s been a few months since I did my last Chicken Soup for the Soul Book Giveaway. Thankfully, I’ve got another Chicken Soup for the Soul giveaway for you. This books is technically for a specific age group, however I think people outside that group would still enjoy it. It’s the Chicken Soup for the Soul: Just for Teenagers!

Being a teenager is difficult. I remember being a teen as I was one just 2 years ago. Gah! I suddenly feel old. icon wink Chicken Soup for the Soul Just for Teenagers #Giveaway Anyways, the memories of being a teenager are still fresh. Heck, I’m still dealing with stuff that happened when I was a teen. I mean I still struggle with my weight and body image issues. I also have memories of how mean all of us girls were to each other in those years.

This book has inspiring and supportive stories for teens and everything they go through. There’s a chapter on friendships (a very important aspect in a teens life), liking yourself (something all of us have to come to terms with), love and relationships, taking a stand, and more. Granted, this book is definitely geared towards teens and most of the stories are from teenagers dealing with things teens go through. However, I’m no longer a teen and I still found a couple stories to relate to.

Score a Date with Your Potential Employer Book #Giveaway

How to Score a Date with Your Potential Employer Book 186x300 Score a Date with Your Potential Employer Book #Giveaway

Since this is my last year returning to college, that means I will have to find a real job next year. Thankfully, I received a book called How to Score a Date with Your Potential Employer by Yolanda M. Owens to help with the complicated process of finding a job.

At first, I couldn’t possibly imagine how trying to get a job was like dating, besides that you might have a couple of different jobs/relationships. However, Yolanda has convinced me and made me see it her way. For starters, you must know yourself so others can appreciate you. In an interview, you are often asked what your good qualities are and you have to market yourself, very much like on a first date.

I really liked chapter 3 which is on your profile or resume. It provides tips, steps, and examples of resumes to guide you through the process of creating your own. Chapter 4 is all about networking – putting yourself out there. Chapter 5 discusses the blind date or interview. icon biggrin Score a Date with Your Potential Employer Book #Giveaway I know that is the most nerve-racking part for me. I suspect I will come back to this chapter to review it next year as it gives tips on figuring out what type of interview it will be (based on location and time) and sample interview questions.

There is also a handy reference section with a list of sites and organizations that may be useful in the job search. I think Yolanda’s idea of comparing getting a job to dating is fantastic. I mean you date a couple of different people to find the right one and have a couple of different jobs. You can’t stay at home to find a job or mate. You want to present yourself in a positive manner on a date and for a job. So, it’s really a great comparison. I think this book is awesome for everyone (getting ready to start) looking for a job, especially for us younger folks. By using the comparison, Yolanda really connects to my age group and makes things easy to understand.

Slightly Odd USA Fact Book Review

Slightly Odd USA Fact Book 251x300 Slightly Odd USA Fact Book Review

I’ve recently had the pleasure of looking though the Slightly Odd United States of America Wacky Fact Book. This is the perfect summer book as it contains so many fascinating facts. It divides the country up by location and devotes a page to each state. It shows the state and then highlights famous people, key events and locations from that state.

I was really happy to discover some facts about some of my favorite brands which have been featured on Laughing Lindsay! For instance:

* Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream was started in an abandoned gas station in Burlington, Vermont.
* The Hershey Company is located in Pennsylvania where half of the company’s stock is owned by a boys school orphanage.
* The Jolly Green Giant’s birthplace is in Le Sueur, Minnesota. 3M Scotch is located in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota. Yay for Minnesota as it’s also where the Pillsbury Dough Boy and Betty Crocker were created! Anyone up for a trip to Minnesota? icon wink Slightly Odd USA Fact Book Review
* Let’s not forget Area 51 in New Mexico!

Doesn’t all of that sound interesting?

There’s also several fun activity pages in the book. Pages include state abbreviations, state nick-names, famous faces, word scrambles, word searches and more! There’s a little something for every child in this book. I think it would provide a good amount of entertainment for someone on a trip. Plus, the parent could help the child with the activities, creating a good bonding experience.

This is a great book for those in 4th through 7th grades (according to Scholastic). There are so many wonderful facts and fun to be had in it. I spent several minutes just scanning through it and reading the interesting facts. So much fun!

Sunset Bridge Book Giveaway

Sunset Bridge Book Cover 186x300 Sunset Bridge Book Giveaway

As you probably know, I love to read. Summer is also the perfect time for a good read. So, I was happy to have the chance to review Sunset Bridge by Emilie Richards. It came out just last month, so it’s a relatively new book. However, the author is not. I hadn’t heard of her prior to this book, but apparently she has written over 60 novels! Wow! I knew that had to be a good sign! icon biggrin Sunset Bridge Book Giveaway

This book is rather thick at 500+ pages. However, that’s because it’s a packed book with multiple engaging characters and story lines. The main character is Tracy Delouche who owns five beach front cottages at a place called Happiness Key and is dealing with a bad divorce. Tracy becomes friends with the people who live in these houses. One tenant is Wanda who was a waitress but now owns her own pie shop. Wanda’s daughter, Maggie, has recently moved to Happiness Key after leaving her police job and love life in Miami. Then, there’s Alice who is an older woman attempting to raise her young granddaughter. Lastly, (but certainly not least) we have Janya who is an Indian wife in an arranged marriage. There is also an approaching tropical storm to add some more adventure. Plus, let’s not forget the surprise pregnancy for Tracy or the murders of the Duttas. Haha! Didn’t I say it was a packed book?

I really like how this book was set up. Emilie presents the stories from the various characters in the story, so you can see where each character is coming from. I think that really helps to develop the stories and help readers really connect with the characters. This is definitely a page turner as you wait to find out what will happen to Maggie caught out in the storm and between Tracy and her baby’s daddy. It was the perfect summer read, too! I think I may have found a new favorite author (lucky for me there are many more books to read from her).

Harry Potter Books Giveaway

Harry Potter Books 194x300 Harry Potter Books Giveaway

One of my first posts on Laughing Lindsay was about Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince Movie. So, obviously, I’m a fan of the series (books and movies). As you may or may not know, the last movie comes out in theaters later this week! Gah! I’m so excited!! icon biggrin Harry Potter Books Giveaway To celebrate, I received 2 wonderful books from Ulysses Press on the series!

One of the books I received was the Unofficial Harry Potter Vocabulary Builder. This books is really neat, especially for an education major like myself. It features 3,000 of the hardest words from all of the books in the series. It doesn’t include words that J.K. Rowling made up for the series, but rather actual words she used in the stories. It starts with “abashed” and goes to “zoological”. The book lists the word, gives its pronunciation (or a word it rhymes with – super handy), part of language (verb, adjective, noun, etc.), definition. Then, it tells which book and page number the word can be found on from the series. Then, it has a sentence using the word. These sentences come together to form another story.

I thought this book was really nice. It can help any child (or adult) interested in the series build their vocabulary. It can be used as you read the series or after if you just want to look through it to learn what a word means. Then, you can look up the word in the books. I think this will be super handy for the classroom since the series appeals to so many people and students. It can really get children interested in learning and reading.

I also received Mugglenet.com’s Harry Potter Should Have Died book. I have visited Mugglenet.com previously as there are tons of things Potter related on the site. However, I had never seen this book. It features several pages of discussions on different topics/themes from the series/movies. It’s set up by introducing the question. Then, the various sides are explained. Lastly, they reach a verdict with a conclusion of which side is more right (if there is such a thing).

Since this book is written by fans of the series, I thought it was interesting to read. I have read all of the books (some multiple times) and seen the movies. However, not many people I know have. So, I can’t really discuss the plot with them as I don’t want to ruin the last movie for them. If you are waiting for the last movie to find out what happens, then don’t read this book. It discusses all of the books and the recent movies, so the plots are definitely revealed (and discussed). However, as a fan, I really enjoyed the book. One of the more interesting ones I read was “Is Severus Snape really a hero?”. Since reading the last book I can no longer force myself to hate him. Haha! It’s good to know I’m not the only one thinking about this character and storyline. Overall, it’s definitely a good read for any Harry Potter fan.

Bonding Over Beauty Book Review

Bonding Over Beauty Book Cover 201x300 Bonding Over Beauty Book Review

I’m going to preface this review with a little history of my own in hopes of helping you understand why I liked the book so much. As I’ve already mentioned, my mother and I don’t really see eye to eye on many things. One of the things I hold against her (right or wrong of me) is the fact that she is not the least bit feminine nor has she taught me how to be. I’m not exaggerating when I say this. My mother hasn’t worn makeup since I can remember. I’ve NEVER seen her apply makeup. She doesn’t even paint her toenails! I don’t want you to think ill of my mother, because she is indeed my mother and she does try. However, everything I know about beauty I had to read to learn about.

That’s why when I was pitched to review the Bonding Over Beauty book by Erika Katz, I happily accepted. You see the whole book (and Erika’s site) is about mothers taking the opportunity to bond with their daughters through beauty rituals/routines/discussions. I think that is a brilliant concept. I mean even to this day I would love to be able to get a pedicure with my mother or something.

What I really appreciated with this book is that Erika doesn’t assume you know all about beauty. Instead, Erika breaks topics up into chapters and gives you information on that topic. For instance, I admit I find the chapter on “getting rid of unwanted hair” interesting. You see my mother has never really discussed this issue beyond shaving my legs and armpits. In recent years (and I mean recent), I’ve realized I have hair in places (which I’m still too embarrassed to admit on here) that I didn’t think could be normal. If it were normal, wouldn’t I have heard about it? However, this book addresses how to get rid of the hair from your upper lip to the stomach area. She tells what the different products available are as well as where they can be used!

After covering the information on the topic, Erika has ideas for bonding with your daughter over it. I was impressed that she had ideas for bonding over puberty and hygiene, which didn’t sound awkward or anything. For instance, she suggested that both mother and daughter read a book and discuss it (which I’m a big fan of). She also mentioned picking out deodorant together and sharing stories with her.

I found this book to helpful on so many levels. I am definitely keeping it for future use. I think it’s a great book for any woman. I mean if nothing else, you might pick up some new beauty tips.

Have you read “Bonding Over Beauty”? What did you think of it? Did your mother ever discuss beauty or personal issues with you?

Disclosure: I received a free copy of the book. No compensation was received. The opinions expressed are my own.

Area 51 Book Review

Area 51 Book 193x300 Area 51 Book Review

Back in May I announced that I was going to post a review of Area 51 by Annie Jacobsen. Well, I’m happy to announce that I finally had the time to sit down and read the entire Area 51 book. I make a point to say the entire thing because the book is actually REALLY big and thick! I mean one of the things I remember most about this book is how heavy it is. It’s not a book I could sit in bed and read or hold up in front of my face. I also wouldn’t pack it for a trip or anything. Haha! It’s hardback and it’s 523 pages total! Gah! That includes notes, index, etc.

I think the full title of this book is actually a great description of the text. It’s full title is: “Area 51: An Uncensored History of America’s Top Secret Military Base”. Let me explain. The area in question has never been acknowledged publicly to exist by the US government. Plus, virtually everything that has happened there since its inception has been classified and will remain so (for at least several more years). All of the things that occur in the area are done on a need to know basis, meaning if you don’t have to know what is taking place there (or even beside you if you happen to work there), then you aren’t told about it. That being said, there are very few people who have ever known the various tests to take place there. Annie Jacobsen has done countless hours of work for this book. She interviewed many, many people. She also poured over the documents that have been declassified on the area. From all of this research, she has been able to layout a basic timeline of history of the place. So, it really is a history of the top secret base.

You know in my style of reviews, I refuse to giveaway too much of the story or info so I don’t ruin it for my readers. So, I won’t give you all of the details of the book in this review (mainly because there’s no way to fit that much information into a simple review). However, I will say that Annie suggests that there has never been any aliens or “unidentified flying objects” in the area. Rather, they were unidentifiable by people who didn’t have a need to know what was going on. Haha! I will also say that she provides evidence that testing really began at Area 51 after the end of World War II with Operation Paperclip which involved several ex-Nazi scientists. This part of the story does fit interestingly with the Ancient Aliens Season 2 DVD I just reviewed yesterday.

This book does have many interesting facts about the area as well as the secret tests the US Army, CIA, and other agencies have performed in the area. It also includes some nice photographs in the book as well as a handy map outlining the various “areas” of the Nevada Test & Training Range. It took me a long while to actually get through the book with all of the facts and random events. I think an actual timeline would have been helpful for this book. I think someone with an interest in US history or something of that nature might enjoy this book.

Disclosure: I received a free copy of Area 51. No compensation was received. The opinions expressed are my own.
