Since this is my last year returning to college, that means I will have to find a real job next year. Thankfully, I received a book called How to Score a Date with Your Potential Employer by Yolanda M. Owens to help with the complicated process of finding a job.
At first, I couldn’t possibly imagine how trying to get a job was like dating, besides that you might have a couple of different jobs/relationships. However, Yolanda has convinced me and made me see it her way. For starters, you must know yourself so others can appreciate you. In an interview, you are often asked what your good qualities are and you have to market yourself, very much like on a first date.
I really liked chapter 3 which is on your profile or resume. It provides tips, steps, and examples of resumes to guide you through the process of creating your own. Chapter 4 is all about networking – putting yourself out there. Chapter 5 discusses the blind date or interview. 😀 I know that is the most nerve-racking part for me. I suspect I will come back to this chapter to review it next year as it gives tips on figuring out what type of interview it will be (based on location and time) and sample interview questions.
There is also a handy reference section with a list of sites and organizations that may be useful in the job search. I think Yolanda’s idea of comparing getting a job to dating is fantastic. I mean you date a couple of different people to find the right one and have a couple of different jobs. You can’t stay at home to find a job or mate. You want to present yourself in a positive manner on a date and for a job. So, it’s really a great comparison. I think this book is awesome for everyone (getting ready to start) looking for a job, especially for us younger folks. By using the comparison, Yolanda really connects to my age group and makes things easy to understand.
