Raising Kids on the Spectrum: Chicken Soup for the Soul Book

You probably already know that I have an endorsement to teach special education. You may recall that I have a special place in my heart for people with Autism (particularly Asperger Syndrome… remember Asperkids?). The following book is one of the main reasons I chose to remain a Chicken Soup for the Soul Official Soup-er Blogger. It’s called Raising Kids on the Spectrum and it’s all about raising children who have Autism (in its various degrees) and I knew I had to received a copy of it (Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book).

raising kids on the spectrum 193x300 Raising Kids on the Spectrum: Chicken Soup for the Soul Book

Raising Kids on the Spectrum

I will admit that there have many times I received a Chicken Soup for the Soul book and simply skimmed over it, enjoying some stories but skipping many that didn’t seem to suit me. This was the first one in a while that I actually wanted to keep reading and I even stayed up late reading it a couple of nights. I haven’t read all of the stories yet, but I have read over half the book and at least a few stories from each chapter of Raising Kids on the Spectrum. So, I feel like I have a pretty good feeling for this book.

That being said, I enjoyed reading Raising Kids on the Spectrum. Many of the stories are very touching. A few are even kind of funny (there’s a whole chapter dedicated to seeing humor with Autism). Obviously, some referenced their faith. However, I didn’t find this one to be as strong on the religion as other books in the series. I thought it was really just a collection of stories from parents who have children with Autism. I had never encountered a book like this before, and I’m glad I had the opportunity to read it.

I’ve seen some of the issues addressed in Raising Kids on the Spectrum, but from the teacher or school’s perspective. It was a nice change to read how parents perceive their children and their struggles (and gifts). I found some stories to be refreshing since they highlighted the positive points of their children. I think some people have a negative image of people with Autism. I loved that this book included stories about people with Asperger Syndrome or high functioning Autism, so that others know that we can’t just judge people. I love that the book challenges us to change the way we see others and how we react to them… it’s impossible to know someone’s situation just by looking at them.

Chicken Soup for the Soul New Year Giveaway

Chicken Soup for the Soul New Year Prize Package Chicken Soup for the Soul New Year Giveaway

Even though my Chicken Soup for the Soul Holiday Giveaway is still going, I wanted to kick-off the new year with a great giveaway featuring a few of their books that are perfect for the new year. These books will help you to feel better and do more in the new year. They can help you tackle those resolutions with confidence and tips. So, let’s get to it.

The first Chicken Soup for the Soul book I want to highlight is Boost Your Brain Power. This book includes stories and tips from Dr. Marie Pasinski of Harvard Medical School for getting the most out of your brain. You will be inspired to read about people who recover from traumatic brain injuries while learning how to boost your own brain power. It’s certainly a neat book in the series.

Another book is Think Positive for Great Health. Dr. Jeff Brown of Harvard Medical School shows us how using our brains can help our health. Stories and tips in the book suggest that other people have used their brains to think positively which helped their physical and emotional health. It’s certainly a fun way to think of things.

Lastly, there’s The Power of Positive. It is similar to the book above, but it’s the more traditional Chicken Soup for the Soul layout with 101 stories about thinking positively. By counting your blessings or just changing your attitude, you can make your situation better, no matter what it is (according to this book).

Now, some lucky readers will get these books, just in time for the new year.

Chicken Soup for the Soul Holiday Giveaway

Chicken Soup for the Soul Holiday Prize Package Chicken Soup for the Soul Holiday Giveaway

Gosh, can you believe it’s Christmas Eve? I hope you are in the holiday spirit now. If not, now is the perfect time to try and get into one. To celebrate the holiday season, I wanted to do a big giveaway of Chicken Soup for the Soul Books. That’s partially because they are highly Christian in nature and partly because my last Chicken Soup for the Soul Book Giveaway was way back in September. Needless to say, I’m behind on these books. So, take a look at a couple of books that would make great Christmas gifts for someone special in your life. Then, enter to win them below.

For starters, let’s look at the book Chicken Soup for the Soul: Married Life! It has 101 stories about the love between a married couple. I’m obviously not married, so it’s a little hard for me to relate to this one. However, it does make me want to get married. I mean who doesn’t want to spend the rest of their live with someone they love?

Another one I can’t relate to as well is Hope & Healing for Your Breast Cancer Journey. Granted, my grandmother is a breast cancer survivor. However, I haven’t had it and I won’t claim to know what it’s like to deal with it. I just know what it’s like as a family member. So, I’m glad this book exists for those unfortunate people who get breast cancer since it contains information and stories for surviving treatment as well as having a life afterwards. I think I will give my copy to my grandmother at Christmas.

The two other books I can understand a little more. I have had a cat in the past and my boyfriend’s mom has several. Also, we had a dog for years before he died this summer (yes, it’s been a rough year in our household). So, I know what it’s like to have a pet that you love in spite of the fact it may do some crazy things. That’s where I Can’t Believe My Cat Did That! and I Can’t Believe My Dog Did That! come in. They both feature 101 stories about some crazy pets that you can’t help but love.

Enter below for your chance to win a copy of each of these books!

Say Goodbye to Back Pain Book Giveaway

Say Goodbye to Back Pain Book 193x300 Say Goodbye to Back Pain Book Giveaway

It’s been a while since my most recent Chicken Soup for the Soul Book Giveaway, so here I am with another one. This one reminds me a lot of the Say Goodbye to Stress Book I reviewed from the series. However, it’s for back pain and it’s called Say Goodbye to Back Pain.

It’s very much like the other Chicken Soup for the Soul Books with its stories of inspiration and hope. This one is different because Dr. Julie Silver of Harvard Medical School provides tips and insight to dealing with back pain as well as just being healthier in general. She divides the book up into 8 chapters and each one has a short article from her about dealing with the topic. The other stories provide more inspiration to corroborate her ideas.

I know that many people suffer from back pain. So, this one could be beneficial to lots of people because of the topic. Are you one of those people? Then, enter below to win a copy of this book!

Say Hello to a Better Body Book Giveaway

Say Hello to a Better Body Book 189x300 Say Hello to a Better Body Book Giveaway

I just posted a Chicken Soup for the Soul Giveaway the other week. However, I mentioned that I have a couple I need to post. So, here I am with another review and giveaway for Chicken Soup for the Soul. I hope you are enjoying all of these new books they are publishing. I feel like they are really trying to reach everyone these days.

This newest one is called Say Hello to a Better Body: Weight Loss and Fitness for Women Over 50. I’m obviously not in the age range for this book. However, I think that the book fits very well with the series since it includes useful tips for everyone. Dr. Suzanne Koven of Harvard Medical School provides loads of information and tips for readers. Every section has pages of useful info about being healthier. She even helps to define what healthy is. Then, other people’s stories follow her knowledge to help inspire you.

I definitely think this is a great addition to the series. It is helpful to women over 50 as well as those of us who just want to live a healthier life. Now, three readers can win this book.

Here Comes the Bride Book Giveaway

Here Comes the Bride Book 196x300 Here Comes the Bride Book Giveaway

I told you in my most recent Chicken Soup for the Soul Book Giveaway that I actually had a couple of reviews/giveaways to post for them. So, here I am with another one for Chicken Soup for the Soul books. I realize that I am not yet married or engaged. However, I have been in a relationship for almost 4 years. Also, I am attending a friend’s (from college) wedding on Saturday. So, it’s not like I don’t think about these things. I was actually kind of looking forward to reading this newest book from them. It’s called Here Comes the Bride.

This is much similar to other books from CSS. It features the usual 101 stories of love. However, all of them deal with getting engaged or married. There are 10 chapters in this book. It features stories on everything from getting engaged to the honeymoon. I think my favorite chapter is the one with the engagement stories. I have talks with my friend from college about how we hope to get engaged someday, much like the people in this book. She has been in a relationship for 5 years. So, we neither of us are strangers to making relationships work over distance (her boyfriend attended another college). Plus, we have been around to hear about our mutual friend’s wedding which is happening Saturday. I think this is fabulous timing for CSS since it is officially wedding season. I actually have a friend from high school getting married the following weekend but I’m not attending it. I also have seen pictures from tons of my other friends weddings this summer (and a few last summer).

If I can relate to this book, I’m sure other people will as well. I say people instead of females because it does include a few stories from men. Now, where is my ring? icon wink Here Comes the Bride Book Giveaway

Say Goodbye to Stress Book Giveaway

Say Goodbye to Stress Book Cover 195x300 Say Goodbye to Stress Book Giveaway

It’s been a month since my last Chicken Soup for the Soul book giveaway and I actually have a couple I need to post. One of them is a bit different from the usual Chicken Soup for the Soul books. Granted, it does contain stories to inspire you and to help you. However, it also has tips for dealing with life. This one is called Say Goodbye to Stress.

This book has 8 chapters on different aspects of dealing with stress in our lives. It covers everything from jobs, money, and your home. Every chapter features 2-4 stories like we are used to from CSS series. Then, there are several tips for dealing with stress in a healthy way. Each tip is related to the chapter to help you deal with that particular situation. I think it is a great way to approach a book on dealing with stress. The tips are provided by Dr. Jeff Brown of Harvard Medical School. This means the tips are really insightful and you can trust them (versus just regular people who have discovered something that works for them).

I am happy to have this book right now as I am stressing about getting a job and my student loans coming due in November. I am trying to picture myself getting a job teaching special education and doing everything I can to get a job. These things are helping me deal with this stress. Now, three readers can learn how to deal with their own stressful lives.

Chicken Soup for the Soul Stay-at-home Moms Book Giveaway

Stay at home Mom Book Cover 190x300 Chicken Soup for the Soul Stay at home Moms Book Giveaway

With my most recent Chicken Soup for the Soul Book Giveaway ending a week ago, I thought it was a good time to post another one. Once again, I was sent a book for moms from the series. This one is called Stay~at~home Moms. So, as you can guess, that’s who it’s meant for.

I can’t say that I can really relate to this book since I’m not a mom, muchless a SAHM. However, I am glad this book exists for those who are. I have true respect for those women who do it. I know that your days are long and busy. Without SAHMs, the world wouldn’t go around since they are the ones who do so much. So, thank you to any of the SAHMs reading this. Devotional Stories for Tough Times Book Giveaway

It’s been over two months since my last Chicken Soup for the Soul book giveaway. So, it’s time for another one from Chicken Soup for the Soul. This time it’s for the book called Devotional Stories for Tough Times. It features 101 daily devotions to inspire and support you in times of need. Here is some info on it:

Struggles test us all, but readers will find counsel and reassurance in these devotional stories of faith, strength, and prayer. This collection is filled with stories that show God’s presence during times of trouble — from illness, addictions, job loss, grief, and much more — providing a boost and reminder of God’s ever-present love. Readers will find encouragement, solace, and hope in these personal stories and prayers.

This book is a little different than other CSS books I’ve reviewed. Every story does have a passage from the Bible before it. However, at the end of each story is a prayer to go along with it. So, you can pick a random story in the book and then say a prayer. You could also read a story or section based on what you are currently dealing with. I thought it was neat that it included a prayer with each story.

The chapters include: Lean on Me, Be Strong and Courageous, Count Your Blessings, and more. I enjoy the Count Your Blessings the most as I try to be more thankful these days. However, the other chapters could be especially helpful in those times of need when something horrible has happened to or around us. Now, on to the usual giveaway…

Chicken Soup for the Soul: Young at Heart Book Giveaway

I realize my Chicken Soup for the Soul: Just for Preteens Book Giveaway just ended. However, I have another wonderful Chicken Soup for the Soul Book to offer my lovely readers. Since the last one was for younger folks, here is something for older people (not necessarily old people). icon smile Chicken Soup for the Soul: Young at Heart Book Giveaway

This one is called Inspiration for the Young at Heart. It is filled with stories that inspire, help, and entertain people who are not necessarily young in age, but in attitude. When I received this book, my mom practically snatched it up. Haha! So, I’m definitely not going to say it’s for old people. I will say that it is for those folks who are older than me.

I’m not sure how much of the book my mom actually read, to be honest. However, I believe she has been enjoying it. Besides, it’s from Chicken Soup for the Soul, so you know it’s gotta be good. Just imagine a great book in the series targeted at older people and there you have it.
