Earth Day the Scholastic Media Way

Scholastic The Magic School Bus Oceans App 300x300 Earth Day the Scholastic Media Way

As you already know, I’m a huge fan of the Scholastic brand. So, I was excited to learn that Scholastic has a product that is great for children for Earth Day. I’m talking about the Magic School Bus: Oceans app for the iPad. The app is based on the Scholastic book “The Magic School Bus: On The Ocean Floor” by Joanna Cole and illustrated by Bruce Degen. It is a great new resource that parents (or teachers) can use to teach their young ones about the bodies of water that compose roughly 70% of the Earth’s surface. Here is a bit more on the app.

With the Magic School Bus: Oceans app, readers ages 4 and up join iconic teacher Ms. Frizzle and hers class of young adventurers on a wild ride to the bottom of the ocean floor. The highly interactive app engages readers with the story by touching animals, characters, and objects on the iPad screen to reveal fun animations, and nearly 40 real photos and videos of underwater animals and plant life.

Here is an awesome video with a preview of the app. Doesn’t it look cool?

Now, I haven’t actually downloaded or tried the app because I don’t have an iPad. However, it look like it would be a good resource for parents, especially homeschooling ones. I think that it could also work in the classroom given the right circumstances and situation. Doesn’t the game look fun?

Earth Friendly Childrens App 300x272 Earth Day the Scholastic Media Way

I think that it’s at least one of the more educational apps for children. Then again, I expect nothing less from Scholastic.

Disclosure: I received nothing for this post. I just thought this looked like a cool app and wanted to share it with my readers. The opinions expressed are my own.

See African Cats Save the Savanna

African Cats One Sheet 205x300 See African Cats Save the Savanna

So, we are in the middle of the Earth Day Event here at Laughing Lindsay and I just wanted to let everyone know about a great movie coming out on Earth Day! The movie is called “African Cats”.

AFRICAN CATS is the third release under the Disneynature label after OCEANS last year and EARTH in 2009. Here is a brief synopsis: Leaping into theaters on Earth Day, 2011, “African Cats” features the real-life love, humor and determination of the kings of the African savanna: Mara, an endearing lion cub who strives to grow up with her mother’s strength, spirit and wisdom; Sita, a fearless cheetah and single mother of five mischievous newborns; and Fang, a proud leader of the pride who must defend his family from a rival lion.

Aww! Here is the trailer for the adorable movie!

Now, if that’s not good enough, what if I told you that you could help some wildlife by seeing it? Here are the details on how you can see “African Cats” and Save the Savanna.

During the film’s opening week (April 22-28), a portion of the proceeds from that week’s ticket sales will be donated to the African Wildlife Foundation through the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund to protect the Amboseli Wildlife Corridor, a passage between the Amboseli, Tsavo West and Chyulu Hills National Parks that is frequently used by lions, cheetahs, elephants, zebras, giraffes and a host of other animals in the African savanna.

Lily Organics Giveaway

Lily Organics Skin Conditioner 95x300 Lily Organics Giveaway

I recently tried a unique oil free skin conditioning serum from Lily Organics. Lily Organics Fresh Skin Care products are made fresh every week in a USDA Certified Organic laboratory in Colorado. The ingredients for Lily Organics are grown on its USDA Certified Organic farm. There are even specific lines for every skin type – Dry, Mature, Oily, Combination, Acne-prone, Sensitive and Normal.

I picked the oil free serum for various reasons. For starters, I’m always worried that a product will clog my pores and give me zits. However, I wanted a facial moisturizer. So, I picked this one since it’s for oily/normal/combination skin. I’m happy to report that my face feels and looks wonderful! It leaves my skin feeling smooth and moisturized. Plus, it didn’t irritate my skin or make me breakout.

The only thing I didn’t care for with the serum was the scent. It’s not a horrible smell, but I’m just used to products having a fruity or floral scent and this didn’t really have that. However, the scent goes away almost immediately and it’s not that bad. I have no problems continuing to use this serum. Overall, it’s a fantastic product.

Organix Hair Care

I’m glad to do another Organix Review as a part of my Earth Day Event. This time I got to try the Tea Tree Mint hair care supplies. Here is some information on what makes Organix different from other hair care companies.

The sulfate-free Organix collection is packaged in eco-friendly bottles manufactured from materials containing recycled post-consumer resin. All labels are printed using environmentally-friendly inks and compostable label film made from annually renewable resource corn, not from petrochemicals.

I got to try the Tea Tree Mint shampoo and conditioner from Organix. The first thing I noticed about this particular line is the scent. It smells wonderful! It’s sort of a sweet-minty smell. I love using it in the shower as it makes it a completely relaxing event. I enjoy taking showers at night to end my day on a nice note and this helps me do just that. Plus, they come in a bright green bottle (perfect for Earth Day) which is nice to see.

The shampoo is nice and creamy. It’s not too runny/liquid like some shampoos I’ve used previously. It’s got a nice look to it that just screams hydration. The conditioner is just as equally great. It too is nice and thick. Both products contain tea tree oils that strengthen my thick hair. It also has milk proteins and peppermint oils which give it that extra bit of hydration and balance.

Organix shampoo and conditioner leave my hair smelling wonderful (I can actually still smell it the next day) as well as hydrated. My hair is shiny (but not oily) and healthier. I truly enjoy the Organix experience.

Disclosure: I received free samples of Organix shampoo and conditioner. No compensation was received. The opinions expressed are my own.

Seven Billion People National Geographic Video

Since I’m starting the Earth Day Event today, I wanted to share a video clip with you. I watched this in my global studies class last week. It’s from National Geographic and it talks about how the world’s population is going to reach over 7 billion by the end of this year. This means we need to try harder to conserve energy and use alternative sources, perfect for the Earth Day Event.

So, what did you think of the clip? What do you do to decrease your impact on the earth?

Disclosure: I received nothing for this post. The opinions expressed are my own.

Pentel Earth Day Giveaway

Green Pentel Pens 300x270 Pentel Earth Day Giveaway

I’m very excited to kick-off the Earth Day Event with a review and very generous giveaway from a fantastic company. Being an education major, I’m in love with writing utensils. I carry around several different pencils and pens to my classes. I love checking out new ones and putting them to the test in my classes. Pentel has made the commitment to produce high quality products that are better for the environment with their Recycology writing utensils. Each Recycology product is made from a minimum of 50% and up to 100% of recycled product! Plus, they didn’t make those products any higher priced than their regular products! How awesome is that?

I received a generous supply of these Recycology products to try out. I was very impressed with the selection and quality of the utensils. I really like the .e-sharp pencil which is made of 72% recycled plastic! It has a very nice grip (comfy for taking lots of notes in a fast lecture) and it comes in pretty colors. I was very impressed with the Super Hi-Polymer Lead which is 100% recycled plastic! It writes smoothly and doesn’t smear away like some lead does. I’m also in love with the EnerGel Liquid Gel Pens. They also feature a nice gripper and write nicely. I could grade papers with these pens all night if I had to.

Pentel was able to strike a wonderful balance between eco-friendly and high quality with the Recycology products. I was surprised to learn that they even have 55% recycled plastic dry erase markers and 54% post consumer recycled plastic retractable & refillable highlighters! Pentel is my new favorite brand of writing utensils for sure. I’m sure they will be getting lots of my money in the future! Haha!

4 lucky readers will win a Pentel Prize Pack of Recycology writing instruments worth $25 each!
