This post on the DSRL video book, Digital SLR Video and Filmmaking for Dummies was made possible by the free copy I received.
I’m probably going to get a new camera for Christmas or my birthday. However, I want something better than my current little point and shoot. However, I will admit that I’m a little anxious about having to learn how to use a fancy Digital SLR camera. That’s why I wanted to receive a copy of the DSLR video book from the For Dummies line.
I think most people use their camera to simply take photos. In fact, I use my camera for primarily picture taking. So, the idea of doing DSLR video seems exciting to me. Perhaps, once I get my new camera, I can use this Filmmaking for Dummies book to do more videos on here. This For Dummies book is perfect for people such as myself. It starts from the very beginning and the author, John Carucci, even points out that one of his assumptions is that the reader is someone who just got a new camera. So, he gives tips for getting started with filmmaking using your new camera. I can’t say that I was able to try out his tips, but the book certainly makes me look forward to getting a new camera. Plus, his brief mentions of certain models of cameras may help me pick out which camera I want.
John also goes on to breakdown the entire filmmaking process with a Digital SRL camera. He talks about the pre-shoot work, the various roles in filmmaking, and even editing the video! I especially enjoyed the final section of the book: The Part of Tens. Chapter 21 is dedicated to 10 ways to improve your filmmaking skills, which covers things that any videographer could use. Then, he also shares technique secrets for filming three popular types of videos: a music video, a wedding video, and a documentary. As you can see, this book covers the process of shooting DSLR video in its entirety. I’m sure that he didn’t include every little detail, because you couldn’t. However, I’m certain he’s included enough info to get me and other people like me started.
So, what do you think of Digital SLR Video & Filmmaking for Dummies? Will you be picking up a copy?
