Tips for Staying Awake While Driving
First off, I want to clarify what it means to drowsy drive. I’m sure we can all recall a time when we’ve been extremely tired. If you recall correctly, you probably remember how groggy you felt and how your reaction time was increased. You also may have had trouble thinking clearly. For those two reasons alone, we should avoid drowsy driving or driving while we are tired. Driving whenever you feel less than awesome can be a hazard to you and others. As such, drowsy driving can and should be avoided with just a few simple steps.
Let’s say you are driving along and you suddenly realize that you are becoming tired. That’s where these tips for staying awake while driving can come in handy.
- Pull over. This is probably the safest thing to do, if you think you are becoming too tired to function at top performance. Simply taking a short nap can be enough to help you finish your trip. I’ve heard that a quick 20 minute nap is considered optimal napping time.
- If you insist on continuing to drive, listen to rock music. Think about it. Music with a beat gets you moving. This in turn keeps you from falling asleep and can wake you up.
- Get out of the car. Again, some movement can re-energize you. Plus, it wouldn’t hurt to stop and walk into a store for some caffeine. Personally, I would go for a frozen or iced coffee. The combination of a cold temperature and caffeine can usually do the trick for me.
- Let someone else drive. I realize that this isn’t always an option. However, if you have passengers, you should see if one of them can take over for you.
The National Sleep Foundation is dedicated to ensuring everyone sleeps in a healthy manner. As such, they are drawing attention to drowsy driving this week to highlight the importance of driving safely and they have created a drowsy driving pledge that you can take online.
