Burbank Studio Tours Compared

Having previously visited and reviewed the three big film studios north of Hollywood, I thought I would compare the Burbank Studio Tours!

For those who don’t know, there are three working studios located near each other in the Burbank/upper Hollywood area: Universal, Warner Bros., and Walt Disney. Each place handles tours differently and seems better suited to different demographics. So, if you are wondering how each of these tours compares and which one is for you, keep reading!

Universal Studios Tour

I’ll start with the first one I did and I would wager is lots of people’s first (and only?): Universal! You see, you can’t actually schedule a straight Universal Studios Tour. However, there’s a ride at the Universal Studios Hollywood theme park that takes you on a cart ride through the studios! The “ride” is included with park admission and can be repeated to see different things.

You can get an extended look at the lot by booking a VIP Tour. I was lucky enough to book it and posted a Universal Studios Hollywood VIP Tour Review back in 2024. We were able to get off the bus and walk through some of the props department. We also got to step on the lot where some “Pirates” movie and “The Good Place” show was filmed.

Neither of these options guarantees access to specific lots though and experiences can vary greatly. The tours can’t access lots where filming is taking place. Plus, Halloween Horror Nights can interrupt the studio tours with props and houses.

I think Universal Studios Tours are more of an add-on to a theme park day. Yes, you visit the back lot and maybe get to walk on a lot when you are VIP. However, it left me wanting more from a studio tour and I was happy to have the WB Studio the next day. If you are curious what a studio lot is like and don’t want to spend all day at a studio, then this is sufficient.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour

The second option is the Warner Brothers Studio Tour. WB has really leaned into the studio tours with multiple tour options. They also host seasonal events to celebrate movie anniversaries and/or holidays throughout the year. On my visit, I only had time to do the standard studio tour. This gets you a 1 hour guided tour of the lot with access to other experiences they estimate will take 2 hours. In my Warner Bros Studio Tour Hollywood Review, I stated that it took me about 2.5 hours total. However, I could have taken much longer if I hadn’t had something else planned for later in the day.

I think the Warner Bros. Tour is best for the folks who really want to see and experience a back lot. Even the standard tour allows you to get off of the cart and walk onto a set! Plus, after the guided portion, then you get to see sets from “The Big Bang Theory”, “Friends”, and more! It was so cool to get a picture on the “Friends” couch/set! There’s sections on “Harry Potter”, “Game of Thrones”, and “Batman”.

Warner Brothers is for people who really want to learn more about the movie making process. You can easily spend a whole day here. I hope to take a longer tour someday, personally. I really enjoyed this tour. However, I enjoy learning about how things work. If you think your group might get bored with a multi-hour experience, then this probably isn’t for you.

Walt Disney Studios Tour

Lastly, there’s the Walt Disney Studios Tour. I think it’s great that the D23 Disney fan club is offering this tour for members. It’s wonderful to visit where the magic was made. Although, this tour focuses on the company’s animated films, which makes it a totally different experience.

As I stated in my Walt Disney Studios Tour Review with D23 this storied lot gave me real pinch-me moments. However, it was a little dry (compared to the other two tours). I would say this is best for hardcore Disney fans. It was amazing to be able to visit Walt Disney’s office and see what it was like when he was alive. It was so cool to walk around where history was made. However, it’s not a traditional studio tour like the others. You don’t get to walk onto a set. Rather, the tour focuses on the animated films that were produced here in the Animation Building. It also highlights the Disney Co. history that happened here.

I love that the tour includes a visit to the Disney Legends Plaza and you get to shop in the special studio employee store for unique merch! Overall, I’d suggest this only for the big Disney fans.

Which Burbank Studio Tours is the best?

I know that people will want to know which Burbank Studio Tours is the best. However, I think it’s subjective and you need to pick the one that suits you/your group best. Universal is a theme park with the studio tour as an add-on. That’s probably better for folks with children. The Disney one is best for big Disney fans. Warner Bros. is great for getting a more intimate look at shows/films actually being made.

Back in September, while visiting California I went down to Hollywood for a guided El Capitan Theatre Tour! I couldn’t find many reviews prior to my trip, so I wanted to be sure to write one myself.

Just a primer for anyone reading this who doesn’t know, the El Capitan Theatre has a storied history. It’s perhaps most-known for being the theater willing to premiere Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane film. However, there’s so much more to its history. Additionally, for any Disney fans reading, the building is currently owned by Disney. In fact, Disney Hollywood premieres (and lots of press events) are held here. Jimmy Kimmel’s show is currently filmed next door. So, the building has lots of history and would be of interest to many different types of people.

Scheduling a Tour

Similar to scheduling a tour at the other famous Hollywood theatres, it’s a matter of luck of the draw if it fits your schedule or not. They do not publish the tour schedule online. In fact, you have to call to actually book a tour. I was able to get a schedule of tours via email a few weeks out. Once again, the other historical theatres don’t know their tour schedules more than a few weeks out either. Since they are historical and located in Hollywood, they are often used for premieres, award shows, and press events. So, they can’t schedule tours too far out.

Currently, the tour costs $25/person and lasts approximately 45 minutes. Tours are typically available on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. I had a tour on a Saturday afternoon.

The Tour

I was shocked to discover that I was the only person to book my tour time slot. So, I was lucky enough to get a solo tour of the theatre! It was so neat to learn more about the history of this building and to be able to ask questions freely. I enjoyed learning about the restoration efforts that took place when Disney came in, especially the detail about having to remove years of smoke from the ornate celing.

It was surreal to go backstage and be able to step on the stage itself! It was so cool to be reminded of the various events that took place right on that very stage! I also got to go into the Richard & Robert Sherman Star Dressing Room! If you know anything about the Disney Parks history, then you who they are! Well, they named the dressing room here after them!

I also got to see the organ up close. It’s a beautiful piece! I also got to see some unique equipment that is used to put people on stage and there’s one even used in Fantasmic! So, that’s a was another nice park reference!

I also got to go behind the theatre and see the back entrance to Jimmy Kimmel! It was neat to realize just how many famous people have been right where I was standing!

Souvenirs

The tour ends with some small gifts. They provide you with a free bag of popcorn and a El Capitan Theatre postcard featuring Mickey & Minnie Mouse! I thought both of those were a nice touch. I was hoping for a little more theatre specific merch in the ice cream shop next door, but only saw one shirt. So, a postcard is a nice way to remember this tour.

Is the El Capitan Theatre Tour worth it?

At only $25/person and 45 minutes, I think this tour is very much worth it. It would be the perfect Hollywood activity for any movie buffs or Disney fans. I enjoyed being somewhere historic and hearing stories about the place. It was a nice addition to my Disney history evening in LA since I had dinner at Tam O’Shanter after my tour.

Back in September, I spent a night at The Garland Hotel while visiting Hollywood. So, I thought I would do a review of my stay.

Prior to my stay in Anaheim back in September, I spent the night in north Hollywood. I selected The Garland Hotel for my one night stay due to its location, history, and calm vibes. Plus, I appreciated the on-site restaurant.

The History

For those who don’t know, The Garland Hotel was initially built by actress Beverly Garland and her husband, along with a Las Vegas hotelier back in the 1970s. It was built to be an oasis away from the hustle and bustle of Hollywood. Today, the hotel is run by Beverly’s son James. So, it’s still a family run business.

The Location

One of the reasons I chose this hotel is for its location. I flew into Burbank airport so that I would be closer to my plans for Sunday, which included going to Bob Gurr’s home and meeting him! So, I wanted something in between Burbank and Anahiem. This hotel stuck out as something in between the two locations, but with a relaxing vibe.

Let the Good Times Roll

The Garland is truly a relaxing oasis outside the hustle and bustle of LA. I instantly felt more relaxed when I got out of the car and entered the property. If you are someone like me who isn’t accustomed to the city life or someone who wants a break from the traffic, then this may be a great option for you.

Since this was a solo trip, I indulged with a king bed. It felt wonderful to have a huge bed all to myself. The room was more than adequate for my one night stay. Although, I did have some issues getting the sliding glass door to the patio to close securely. Also, the shower was interesting without a door to close. I also heard some loud people in the hallways since I went to bed earlier than some folks (I’m from the East Coast and this was during Halloween Horror Nights season). Overall though, I’d say it was a comfortable place to stay.

Front Yard Restaurant

A quick note on the hotel’s on-site restaurant. Eat there! The hotel special that I booked came with a dining credit that I was able to use at the restaurant. I got a grilled chicken sandwich (the Socal Chicken Sandwich) and a Wildberry Pop Tart at brunch when I arrived. I was starving and it filled me up. In fact, I saved the majority of the tasty Pop Tart for breakfast the next day and it was still good. I highly recommend trying this restaurant if you are staying here. It’s definitely worth it.

Pros

  • Relaxing vibes – This was a nice change of pace from the crowds and chaos of Hollywood.
  • Location – It’s excellent for a visit to Burbank and/or Hollywood.
  • Cool history – There’s even a documentary on the hotel tv about Beverly Garland. I recommend checking it out during your stay.
  • Great food – The Front Yard is a great restaurant. It’s super convenient too.
  • Friendly staff – Everyone I encountered here was really friendly and helpful.
  • Luggage storage – Since I had plans in the area on Sunday, luggage storage was very important to me. I was pleased that they were able to store my luggage securely.

Cons

  • Balcony door – I had housekeeping look at my door and they had to get maintenance to come close it securely. I was afraid to pull too hard on it to check to see if was closed securely afterwards. However, I consider that door a con as it’s difficult to know it’s closed for sure.
  • Shower doesn’t have a door – The shower set up is interesting, but I have since had another shower without a closing door on it at another hotel. So, I assume this is fashionable now.
  • Some noise – While this was definitely quieter than staying in Hollywood, I still heard some loud people in the hallways. However, that’s almost par for the course at hotels these days. Also, it didn’t go on for too long.
  • Tad pricey – Then again, all hotels in this area are expensive. I paid $315 for the daily rate, which came to $377.80 after taxes. However, that also includes a dining credit that I used for two meals.

Is The Garland Hotel worth it?

I found The Garland Hotel to be a relaxing experience with good food. I’d stay here again. I think it’s worth it if you are doing things in the area and want a break from Hollywood.

Tam O’Shanter Walt Disney Table 31 Review

While in southern California last month, I had the pleasure of doing the Tam O’Shanter Walt’s Table 31 Experience! Since I didn’t see many reviews on it, I thought I would post one.

For those who don’t know, Tam O’Shanter is one of Los Angeles’s oldest family owned restaurants! Having been a local favorite for over 100 years, many famous folks have dined here. In fact, Walt Disney was known to eat here with animators and Imagineers prior the the studios having a commissary! Knowing that many Disney fans eat here, a special Walt’s Table 31 Experience was created! Booking this experience is the only way to guarantee you will be able to eat at the specially designated table that Walt Disney supposedly ate at! Plus, you get to eat from a special menu and get a few special keepsakes.

The Ambiance

The Tam is a Scottish themed steakhouse! If you enjoy themed dining, this is a great place to check out in LA. Just eating here, you know you are surrounded by history. Supposedly, the cottage exterior inspired the Disney animators when working on Snow White’s cottage! Not only that, many TV shows have been filmed here! The restaurant appears in The Office’s series finale and in the show Mad Men!

To add to the atmosphere, the restaurant got napkins from the Disney Company with drawings and notes taken at the Tam. Then, they had those messages and pictures etched into this table! So, it was nice to look at the various images and messages while thinking what discussions may have taken place in this very restaurant! For instance, they claim Imagineers worked on the dinosaurs for the Disneyland Railroad here!

The Food

A restaurant wouldn’t stay in business for 100 years if it wasn’t good! Just for the experience, they have created a special menu! Everyone starts out with Deviled Eggs & Pickled Vegetables plus Bacon-Wrapped Dates! The deviled eggs were good, but pickled vegetables aren’t my thing. I don’t even like regular pickles though. Ha! I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the bacon-wrapped dates! I enjoyed the combinations of flavors (salty and sweet).

For my first course, I went with The Tam’s Famous Chili. Even though it had been in the 80’s that day, I had to try it. I would say it’s a pretty good chili. The addition of the cheese and onions took it up a notch. Had I had more stomach space and had it been a cooler day, I would have eaten way more of it.

As for the entree, I had to get the Prime Rib! I’d never had prime rib, so I can’t say that I’m a good judge of such things. However, I will admit that it was good. A little salty, but really tasty. Then again, I typically eat turkey or chicken for my protein. I also enjoyed the accompanying mashed potatoes and creamed corn. The Yorkshire pudding was ok. A little dry, but good.

Lastly, for dessert, I ordered the English Trifle. It reminded me of a fancy strawberry shortcake. It was sweet and a great way to end the meal!

The Experience

Throughout the meal, my waiter shared lots of little tidbits about the restaurant as well as stories about Walt Disney. It was surreal to hear stories that had taken place in this very space. It really felt like I was eating in a place of history.

Additionally, at the end of the meal, my waiter brought me some special keepsakes! I got a Tam pin, a re-print of the special drawing from the Disney Company of the restaurant, and a postcard! I also received a punch card for the experience and was told that the gifts change each time you do it. So, I guess that increases repeatability for the experience.

Is the Tam O’Shanter Walt’s Table 31 Experience worth it?

I booked this meal about 2 months in advance. I prepaid $89 for the meal plus tax and a 20% gratuity. So, it ended up being a really expensive meal. However, I reasoned that it’s more than just a meal. It’s an experience. You are getting to dine at a table in a restaurant filled with history! It’s a unique event that you can’t do anywhere else. Plus, the food is plentiful and tasty! I would say this is worth it for any Disney fan. However, if you aren’t a big Disney fan or don’t enjoy history, you can probably just book a regular table here and enjoy the good food!

On my most recent trip to California, I was able to take the Warner Bros Studio Tour! Today I’m doing a little review of that experience.

As I mentioned in my Walt Disney Studios Tour review, there are three big studios in Burbank: Disney, Universal Studios Hollywood, and WB. On this trip I was lucky enough to fit in all three! Having already posted my review of the other two, it’s finally time for the Warner Bros. one.

While there are several tour options here, I did the standard tour due to time constraints. I would love to return for a longer tour some day though. It’s $73/adult and has several time slots available most days. It’s advertised as 1 hour guided tour and 2 hours self guided. I spent around 2.5 hours in total here. So, that’s not far off.

Guided Backlot Tour

Following a brief introductory video, the groups are split up and paired with their tour guide for a 1 hour backlot tour. This was hands-down my favorite part of the experience. It was so neat to see where lots of popular movies and shows have been made over the years. Abbott Elementary was filming while I was there and we got to drive past their elementary school facade. The new show Pitt was also filming. In fact, we had to be quiet near its building because the red light was on, indicating it was actively filming. So, that was super neat!

The tour guide drives you around the lot on a golf cart. However, you get off at various points to explore a little. We got to see houses used for Pretty Little Liars (including the garage and the church). We also got to see the houses used for Gilmore Girls, as well as the famous gazebo and place used for Luke’s Diner. It was neat to spot the bank from Gremlins as well.

We drove by the studios used for Friends and The Big Bang Theory! We even drove through the shop where they make walls and other wood items! It smelled great!

Friends

This experience is ideal for any fans of the show Friends. Phoebe’s guitar is on display in the lobby! There’s a set photo opportunity after the guided tour. There’s also a Central Perk Cafe where you can actually get a coffee and something to eat! I got a pizza cone thing, a Phoebe drink (cookies and cream), and Rachel’s trifle without meat (chocolate version). I enjoyed eating those items in a replica of the sitting area of the cafe. There was also some costumes worn on the show to look at. After eating, another golf cart took me to get a picture of the fountain used in the show!

The Big Bang Theory

This tour is also great for fans of the show The Big Bang Theory. They had another set photo opportunity for the show as well as costumes on display. It was cool to see the apartment come to life!

Harry Potter

There’s a whole section dedicated to the Harry Potter/Fantastic Beasts films. It was cool to see the spot under the stairs that was Harry’s room. It was also great to experience that after visiting Universal the day before. Plus, we could see Hogwarts from the WB lot!

Game of Thrones

There’s currently a small section showcasing some costumes and props used on the series Game of Thrones. I took pictures of all of that to show my husband since we watched that show together and he’s read the books.

Exclusive Merch

There’s a gift shop in the lobby of the main building that you see when you arrive and leave. So, I recommend shopping there at the end of the tour so you don’t have to carry stuff around. I purchased a Warner Bros Studio Tour shirt to mark the occasion. There’s additional exclusive Friends merch at the Central Perk Cafe. If you spot something there you like, you should get it as I didn’t see much of an overlap.

Is the Warner Bros Studio Tour worth it?

I really enjoyed this tour. It was definitely worth the $73. In fact, I wish I’d had more time to do the longer tour. If I ever return, I will be booking one of the longer tours. The guided backlot tour felt a little rushed and too short. So, I’d love a longer period of time on the lot. I think the tour is most enjoyable for people who like or are at least familiar with the shows featured. I actually started watching Friends for the first time to prep for this tour and I am glad I did so.
